Australia Post Memorial Stamp 2013

This stamp is part of the “Headline News” series issued by Australia Post in 2013, which commemorated significant events in Australian history. This particular stamp highlights Cyclone Tracy, a pivotal event in Australian history that devastated Darwin on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in 1974.

The design features a headline-style layout with the caption “Tracy Destroys Darwin” and an archival photograph of the widespread destruction. Cyclone Tracy’s impact was catastrophic, with the city nearly levelled, more than 30,000 people displaced, and a long recovery process following. The series aimed to document major events that resonated deeply with Australians, using the medium of postage stamps to ensure these stories remain part of the nation’s collective memory.

Demolished houses in Darwin are featured on a 60 cent Australian postage stamp issued in 2013.
