Did you know Avis, or would you like to help remember her? Leave a comment in the post, below.
Avis was a nursing sister at Darwin hospital and was on board the Ferry, Mandorah Queen. The Mandorah Queen was found in 1981 at the northern end of Weed Reef. Avis and the crew members were never found.

In 1974, as a lawyer in Darwin, I acted for Avis. I cannot remember what the matter was about, however, it was not matrimonial/family related because I have never practiced in the field and all the files have been destroyed. Over the years, I have always remembered Avis. Obviously the lasting memory is when I knew that she had died on the Mandorah Queen. The second is that I had recognized her inscription (pictured) in the wet cement on the footpath in Mitchell Street outside what was then known as the Vogliotti Building. The third was that after my office (sort of) reopened, a “Mr. Daniels” (I confirmed his identity but not his status) came in (and he revealed he knew I had acted for Avis) and sought my assistance to lodge a claim for compensation with the Feds as a victim’s relative! I advised him that I could not act for him. Nevertheless he still tried probably 3 – 4 times afterwards! Finally, I do know who penned the phrase “the smell of a quid brings out the best in people” but he and numerous others over my 51 years of legal practice proved spot on. RIP Avis
She was my sister and I miss her still ‼️
Avis was my older sister. She was a person of great style and imagination. A well-traveled and broad-minded person, she was having a wonderful life in Darwin with the love of her life. Her untimely death taught me to live my life fully while I had it and was influential in encouraging me to change careers and become an artist.
