John Turner was my uncle, born in Scotland and somehow transferred from the British Navy to the Australian Navy as a young able seaman. He married my aunt Jean Dick and lived in Toowoomba where he worked an an electrician. He and my aunt took over the care of myself and my older brother after the death of our mother from tuberculosis when I was about 2 years old until I was about 7 when we were sent to live elsewhere but returned to my aunt and uncle for school holidays. After I left school at 16 and started working, I returned to live with them full time, leaving to marry when I was in my early 20s. After the death of my aunt, my much loved uncle came to live with us in Darwin. He was killed during Cyclone Tracy and is buried in the McMillans Road Cemetery.
